Hemorrhoids. The dreaded word that is associated with getting older and a lot of pain and discomfort during bathroom time. Hemorrhoids are a swollen grouping of veins in the lower rectum region and anus; symptoms include itching, bloody stool, rectal pain and prolapsed, which is when the hemorrhoid protrudes out of the anal canal. Hemorrhoids are usually harmless but can be very painful and bothersome. Follow these 5 easy tips from your GI Doctor to treat your hemorrhoids from the comfort of your own home.
Increase your Fiber Intake
Fiber is one of the easiest and most effective ways to help in the fight against hemorrhoids. 20 to 30 grams of fiber a day is recommended; you can get your fiber from food our supplements. Some fiber supplements can cause bloating so it is important to try different brands until you find the best one for you.
Don’t Wait
Do not push off the urge to use the bathroom; it is important that you go right away. Delaying bowel movements can increase the size of the hemorrhoid and cause constipation.
Elevate your Feet
Try elevating your feet on a small stool when using the restroom; this changes the position of your rectum that might ease the pain of passing a bowel movement over a hemorrhoid.
Try a Natural Lubricant
Eating a mixture of applesauce, yogurt and 1 tablespoon of mineral oil for your first meal of the day acts as a natural lubricant and will make it easier to pass a bowel movement. However, you should not use this dietary mixture for too long because it can cause diarrhea with overuse.
Over-the-Counter Treatments
Over-the-counter treatments like hazel infused pads, soothing creams and ointments (Preparation H) can help to relieve the symptoms and pain caused by hemorrhoids.
