Crohn’s Colitis
Crohn’s disease is a form of inflammatory bowel disease which can involve any part of the digestive tract (mouth to anus). Unlike ulcerative colitis, which only involves the colon, patients with Crohn’s disease may demonstrate healthy sections of colon and rectum as well. Accurately diagnosing the severity of Crohn’s disease from which a patient suffers is essential to identifying the appropriate method of treatment. If you think you may be suffering from Crohn’s disease or another condition affecting your digestive health, don’t hesitate to visit Dr. Berookim for an evaluation.
Symptoms of Crohn’s Colitis
The following signs and symptoms may indicate that a patient is suffering from the form of Crohn’s disease known as Crohn’s (granulomatous) colitis:
- Joint pain
- Skin lesions
- Rectal bleeding
- Anal abscesses, fistulas, and ulcers
- Diarrhea
Because Crohn’s colitis shares symptoms with other forms of Crohn’s disease and various gastrointestinal diseases in general, seeking evaluation by a board-certified gastroenterologist is crucial to determining the appropriate treatment method.
Diagnosing Crohn’s Colitis
Dr. Berookim may perform a colonoscopy or other imaging test to determine whether you are suffering from Crohn’s colitis. While many patients associate colonoscopy with colon cancer testing, the procedure is also used to diagnose the cause of rectal bleeding, diarrhea, and other GI symptoms.
Before your colonoscopy, Dr. Berookim will sit down with you to discuss your medical history. He will also explain the bowel preparation needed to ensure your colonoscopy is a success.
You will be under conscious sedation during your colonoscopy to ensure you remain comfortable and relaxed. The procedure lasts just 30 minutes and offers invaluable information about your colorectal health. If tests reveal you are suffering from Crohn’s colitis, Dr. Berookim will sit down with you to determine the best steps for managing your condition.
Treatment for Crohn’s Colitis
At this time, there is no cure for Crohn’s colitis. The goal of treatment is to alleviate symptoms and get patients back to living a symptom free life again. Depending on the severity of your particular case, Dr. Berookim may prescribe the following medications and procedures:
Anti-inflammatory agents. These medications are used to reduce inflammation in the large intestine.
Antibiotics. These medications may treat infections and help heal fistulas and abscesses.
Immune-suppressors. Immunomodulators can help control symptoms.
Corticosteroids. These drugs help prevent inflammation and ease symptoms of Crohn’s. A large initial dose may be prescribed when the disease is especially active.
Surgical Treatments. Patients with severe cases of Crohn’s colitis that do not respond well to medication may benefit from surgery. Additionally, patients with the following complications may want to consider surgery:
- Repeated infection
- Perforation, blockage or obstruction
- Fistulas
A colectomy involves the surgical removal of part or all of the colon and rectum and may be an option for people with severe Crohn’s colitis.
